History, Humor and How-to
Welcome to Around the World in 80 Dyes, a fun, non-scientific non-academic exploration of natural dye for fabric and fibers.
Bright pinks, soft corals, deep browns and vibrant yellows can all be created by sustainably using what's in the kitchen, the garden, the forest, the roadside. Follow along to learn how.
Janet Day, the owner and artist behind Around the World in 80 Dyes. I am a career journalist, life-long quilter and textile artist, daughter of painters, curious kid from the hippie era with a fascination for color and its creation. Maryland native and hardened New Yorker softened by following my soul to the Rocky Mountain West.
Let me take you on an adventure through creating color from natural dye sources, including how someone figured out that peeing in an indigo vat added ammonia needed to turn textiles blue. As I experiment and travel, I'll record it all on the blog and newsletter.
After years of smashing flowers into textiles and staining my fingernails in pots of dye, it's time to share my discoveries and disasters more widely with a fun, non-scientific adventure in natural dye around the world.
